Q&A on Avian Influenza (H5N1)
What is Avian Influenza (H5N1)?

Avian Influenza, or "bird flu", is a viral infection that primarily affects birds but can sometimes infect humans and other animals. H5N1 is a subtype that has caused serious illness and death in humans. The virus spreads from birds to humans primarily through close contact with infected poultry or contaminated environments.

Most human cases of H5N1 infection have been linked to close contact with infected birds, their droppings, or contaminated environments. Human-to-human transmission is extremely rare but has been documented in very limited circumstances. There is ongoing monitoring for any mutations that might increase its transmissibility.

Symptoms typically begin within 2–8 days of exposure and may include high fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches. Some individuals may develop severe respiratory illness such as pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea are also reported. H5N1 infection can be fatal, and early medical attention is crucial.

If you have symptoms and have recently been exposed to birds or poultry environments, you should seek medical attention immediately and inform health workers about your exposure history.
